- עִינּוּי, עִנּ׳II m. (עָנָה II) 1) delay, postponement. Ab. V, 8 ע׳ הדין delay in executing judgment, contrad. to עוות; Ab. dR. N. ch. XXXVIII; Sabb.33a. 2) affliction, oppression; suffering. Mekh. Mishp. s. 18 (ref. to ענה תענה, Ex. 22:22) אחד ע׳ מרובהוכ׳ whether a great oppression (effecting a great loss), or a small oppression; Yalk. Ex. 349. Yoma 74b ע׳ בידי שמים a divine affliction; ע׳ בידי אדם an affliction at the hands of men. Sifré Deut. 130 (ref. to Deut. 16:3) it is called ‘bread of misery with reference to the affliction which they suffered in Egypt; a. fr.Esp. (with or without נפש) self-affliction, mortification of the flesh. Yoma l. c. (ref. to Lev. 16:31) ע׳ שיש בו אבידת נפש an affliction with which a loss of vitality is connected (v. אֲבֵידָה). Ib. (ref. to Deut. 8:3) מה להלן ע׳ רעבוןוכ׳ as there affliction means suffering through lack of food, so here Ib. 77a רחיצה דאקרי ע׳ that abstention from bathing is called a privation.
